Kobold
As you may have heard, the tiny little magazine has been unleashed to its subscribers. Single issues will be available soon are available now at paizo.com and on the Free City site.

And then there's the paper subscriptions that so many folks have asked about. These will be a limited supply, and first-come, first served. When you subscribe to the paper edition, you get both the PDF and a paper copy. The 4-issue subscriptions are $36 for the US, $40 for Canada, and $56 for everywhere else, including all shipping and handling.

US Paper+PDF Subscription:

Upgrades: If you already have a PDF subscription, you can upgrade simply by paying the difference; this button shows that you've already subscribed. The upgrade is $20 for the US, $24 for Canada, and $40 for everywhere else.

Thanks for your support!

If you already have...
Should that say "If you already have a *PDF* subscription"?

Yes, yes it should. I'll edit to fix.

Wolfgang...

Ok, I have a current PDF subscription, great. I want a Paper+PDF subscription, of course. I paid the early subscriber rate for the PDF version. The button does not show the value of what I will pay to upgrade, its blank waiting for me to insert a cost. What cost do I put in the box? Do I consider the difference between the original pre-order and post-order cost at all? Will I still get a paper version of issue 1?

You're probably reading too much into it. People who signed up at the super-cheap intro rate and people who got the normal subscription discount can both sign up with the same upgrade rate.

Really, where you live is the main factor. Postage is a killer.

Postage is deadly
Wow, you're not kidding when you said that postage is a killer. An extra $5 US per issue for those outside of the US and Canada. That sucks for the international subscribers that want a hard copy.

Personally I not really bothered by the fact that KQ is in an electronic format so I'm happy with my $12 subscription. It just sucks how much the postage costs are. And it's not like you are getting anything for that Wolfgang. :-/

Re: Postage is deadly
Yeah, I'm not at all happy about the postage rates I found for Europe, Australia, and elsewhere. $6.60 is about average per issue, so $26.40 per year is just shipping. I seriously debated an international rate of $60. But I'd like to have some international subscribers.

Once you add in the cost of printing and the cost of paying writers and artists, and it's quickly clear that most paper magazines live off the ads.

I think the PDF is a steal, and if the paper edition doesn't attract enough subscribers, I'll have to drop it. But I'm certainly willing to give it a year to grow, see how it does.

Question
I see the button, confirming (as I remembered) that I subscribed, but I haven't received the PDF. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Question
I have two subscribers whose copies are currently undelivered because their email on file doesn't work (one's a relay failure, the other thinks all gmail addresses are spam).

Contact me directly by email and I'll get it sorted.

I'll upgrade to the paper+PDF edition, as soon as I'm able. but I've been fortunate enough to get caught up in Micron's mass layoff and firing spree.

Now, in a more on topic and funny note, it says that Erik Mona was questioned and released unharmed after capture, but was he tagged?

The radio collar is still transmitting, but the GPS seems to indicate that it is in the Greater Renton Municipal Waste Facility.

I think the bastard found the tag and flushed it, thus denying science much valuable information about the migration habits of the wild Paizoian. :)

Next time you tag him, use a subdermal and if he argues it, tell him the next choice is the pill he swallows or the pill he doesn't swallow.

Paper rocks! Plus its effectively limited edition. From what I have seen so far, the magazine is definitely worth it. Hell, I would have bought it just for the Mona interview, and there is lots more stuff in there just as good to me. I want this to bloom into a full fledged paper periodical.

I think it might, over time, but it would have to grow slowly, by word-of-mouth.

I don't know how to get the distribution I need for a really big circulation, and I certainly don't have the kind of backing that could just go directly from small, cool zine to big circulation.

Wow! This is really, really great! It is even better than my Patron's-High Expectation.

Thanks for helping to fill the void! Oh and yeah, I've bumped my subscription, too (mainly so I can show people what they're missing).

Happy Subscriber
I had no doubt in your abilities, so I early-bird subscribed when I first learned of KQ. Having now read through it, I am extremely happy I jumped on that bandwagon.

Here's to many more successful issues!

Quick request: can you post all the abbreviations used for the Underdark monsters list here? I got most of them, but not all. Thanks!

Yeah, a couple are tricky. MM and FF are obvious, and AB, CC, and ToH1 to ToH3 are familiar to any d20 gamer.

FC = Frilond Campaign web site
RCS = Realms campaign setting
MoF = Monsters of Faerun
EG = Empire of the Ghouls
MGU = Monster Geographica Underground
CoC = Call of Cthulhu
DC = Dungeon Craft
U = Underdark
CSQ = City of the Spider Queen

And of course I found a couple typos and errors in the chart. Always double-check charts. Cave moths should be CR 1/2. Dracolisk is from ToH1, not OH1.

CC = Creature Collection?
ToH = Tome of Horrors
AB = Advanced Beastiary?

I'm pretty sure about the first two, not so sure about AB. And what is OH1?

Correct on all three counts.

OH1 is a typo for ToH1. It's fixed in the print version.

Zipped?
Wolfgang, is it possible for you to deliver the PDF's zipped in future? I'm on dial-up at home still (hopefully moving to broadband soon) so the smaller file size would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Zipped?
PDFs are already somewhat compressed, so zipping them doesn't help much. For example I just zipped my copy and it only decreased in size from 8266 KB to 8078 KB.

Re: Zipped?
Yeah, that was my discovery at well. However, I do have a "file size cap" version that I mail out to people whose ISP does not permit an 8 MB attachment.

I could certainly send that to [info]olaf_the_stout in future.

Re: Zipped?
If zipping is only going to make a 200kb difference to the file size Wolfgang I don't know if it will be worth your worry.

Small but Fierce!
KQ1 was a good read. The interview with Erik was nice, but... "Titivillus, the Scribe of Hell" was great.

Review?
Those that have recieved the PDF; I highly recommend doing reviews of the magazing at ENWORLD, RPG.NET and elsewhere. I think this would definitely increase visibility and also give the public a better understanding of whether the purchase is worth it or not.

So, if I were to subscribe now would I get the first issue (I am talking about a pdf subscription, not a print. I have no desire for a print subscription), or am I out of luck?
[info]open_design wrote:

Oh, subscribing and not getting issue #1 would suck, and we kobolds hate to suck. :)

So, yeah, $16 gets you a sub starting with the current issue, unless you tell me otherwise.

Kobold Quarterly Printed Version
If I get a printed version of Kobold Quarterly #1 toady, how will that be different that get a custom printed one a year from now.
Will there be any differance?

Re: Kobold Quarterly Printed Version
I'm not sure I understand your question.

The printed version is going on press and will go to subscribers. When the last back issue is sold, that's it.

I originally thought about doing a print version through lulu.com, but I've dropped that. It's a magazine, not a book. If circulation is too low, I may revisit that in a year.

Does that answer the question?

Love the mascot
Wolfgang,

Another fine job! Love KQ. But a HUGE congrats on what I feel is an AWESOME mascot. I hope (and the artist who gave you the final version) sticks around for every cover (hopefully in various poses or activities). What character!

Re: Love the mascot
Thank you, I'm glad you like it.

The kobold is a very fine piece and I'm hugely happy with how he turned out. I'll certainly commission Mr. Calvert for more work in the future, and maybe we'll see some additional poses. Good idea!

A seriously belated thumbs up for this! The first issue is great and well up to any comparison (yes, I'd certainly include most issues of Dragon in that).
