  • Nov. 22nd, 2007 at 10:59 PM
Kobold
The print edition of Kobold Quarterly #2 is officially sold out. I mailed the last issues to new subscribers today.

The issue is available as a PDF from Paizo.com and Your Games Now.

If you want to guarantee yourself a copy of the print edition of #3 (and trust me, it's looking great), subscribe today.

The print edition of Kobold Quarterly #2 is officially sold out.

So... how many sold out editions before officially announced a success?

I'll call it a success on its (modest) goals right now.

The real test comes when it goes into wider distribution, and either the gaming community embraces it or it meets with widespread indifference. I'm frankly unclear on whether all the noise about the death of print magazines reflects a magazine-buying public or just a certain nostalgia for better art and bound versions of cool articles instead of loose-leaf printouts.

Anyone who actually wants a print magazine for RPGs should be a subscriber. If there's not enough of those folks to support it, I'll ax the print edition. I'm giving it a year before I have to make the call.

Well, I know I am trying to pimp this on my side as much as I can!

A couple of things...

1- I forget if this has been mentionned anywhere, but is there a release schedule for KQ? Something you could post so folks (and potential new clients) would see and look forward to?

2- Did you / would you like to post excerpts maybe? That's another great way to advertise. Maybe?

Good point.

1. No schedule currently posted, though #3 ships in January and #4 in April.
2. The PDF preview of the contents is up on the Free City site and on koboldquarterly.com. No other previews are available yet, but it's a good idea.

When Wizards (in their infinite wisdom) cancelled Dungeon and Dragon) it was interesting how many folk commented on how they found print a preferred medium.

Well - this allows them to prove that. (As I will), by signing up - for the long haul on a preference for print!

They might prefer print, but gamers are slow to shift their loyalties. I appreciate you signing up for print; plenty of surprises in the next issue!

I'll keep offering the best paper magazine I can for a good while; if print finds an audience, I'll be delighted. If not, the PDF version may continue, just to provide an alternative to the WotC web site.

WEll, I prefer print but not so much that I'm willing to pay extra for it. My disappointment over the whole thing wasn't that the magazines weren't being printed anymore. It was that they weren't being edited by the Paizo staff any more. I've been less than overwhelmed by the "new" Dungeon and Dragon magazines on the WotC website.

Yeah, I hear the concern about cost. It's a sad fact that printing and shipping paper costs a lot more than putting up a web page. There's no way around it.

Naturally, if people don't see the value in a print edition, it will eventually fade away. As a publisher, I'm just as happy to distribute as PDF.

The Paizo gang seem to be doing fine with Pathfinder and Gamemastery. I haven't seen any magazines on the WotC site, just some web articles. I'm very curious to see whether WotC does convince a large audience to pay for the site.

In the meantime, I'm happy to offer both worlds.
