Halls of Mtn King
After several attempts at putting together a commission for the next Open Design, I've got to admit to a certain degree of confusion as a publisher. While some folks were excited by the content of the adventures being considered on the KQ Forum, many of the questions boil down to "What edition will you be supporting?". That's an important element, no doubt, and it keeps a designer of adventures quite humble. Which may be a good thing.

But I don't want to burden patrons with seeing every option in two edition flavors, and asking everyone to vote BOTH for an edition and for an adventure pitch. Patronage shouldn't be complex (and there's a Open Design FAQ here to keep it simple).

So, I'm not fighting the tide. The theme is set in advance, and the patrons will decide whether this project will be OGL (effectively 3rd Edition compatible) or 4th Edition. (Those patrons whose edition is not chosen will get a full refund, as always). After so much Feywild elfness, I need a change of style — full details after the cut.

Halls of the Mountain King

Open Design has gone to cities, deserts, the underdark, castles, and more, but we've never done a traditional dungeon. (And we're never going to!)

Instead, Halls of the Mountain King will be a very untraditional dungeon, an homage to Moria and Undermountain that does add a few twists. The maps will be done in the Ruins of Undermountain style (that is, maps drawn in close collaboration with the cartographer).

Plot and story will be worked out collaboratively, though I have a core concept. The dwarves are a hard-working group, whose mining of adamantine lured them ever-deeper and whose pursuit of liftgas ore led them likewise into dangerous territory. The vertical dungeon goes from the depths of the earth through the great halls and works of a vanished clan, up to a snowy mountaintop spire. Possibly topped off by an airship dock, as suggested by Kobold Quarterly magazine's recent article on airships. Much more detail to come in the Forums and as the result of patron discussion.

Despite the emphasis on dwarven halls, I'll be riding herd on the design to avoid cliches. No crypts loaded with undead, no orcs or goblins who rule the halls. Something else has led to the dwarven collapse.

Maps: This dungeon will include roughly 20 tactical maps and a massive overview/cutaway of the vertical dungeon. With a little luck, it may also include a 3D/isometric map, like the ones in I6 Ravenloft. The adventure itself will have 40 encounters total. About half of them will be combat, a quarter traps/hazards, and a quarter skill challenges and roleplaying.

Bonus For 3rd Edition: If Halls is commissioned for 3rd Edition play, this project will also include a 48-page Zobeck Gazetteer focused on the dwarves and gearforged of Zobeck, rituals for how to become a gearforged PC, the cults and devil worshippers of the city, and a section on Kariv life and culture, plus special rules for gypsy PCs and urban kobolds as PCs. And whatever else senior patrons request.

Bonus For 4th Edition: If commissioned for 4th Edition play, this project will also include a 48-page Delver's and Flyer's Gazetteer. We'll create new dwarven rituals, dwarven magical items, and clan lore and PC clan feats, and a LOT of new gear usable by non-dwarves as well. Plus a section of DM hazards for the delvers, adventure seeds for the DM, and a small horde of monsters appropriate to the setting. And whatever else senior patrons request.

Designers
I'll be writing the Gazetteer (whichever one it is), possibly with direct contributions from senior patrons. I'll definitely be writing at least one level of the Halls, possibly two or three, but I won't be the only author.

Professional freelancers and senior patrons will be able to pitch their work for the other levels. All patrons can vote on whose pitches are accepted.

For the professional designers, I'll stick my neck out and say that the Tim Connors, Nicolas Logue, and Richard Pett will all be invited to submit a professional pitch for a level of the Halls. Probably also Jeff Grubb, Ed Greenwood, and Jonathan Tweet, though I expect they may say no. Then again, Grubb said yes to Six Arabian Nights.

Senior patrons and major donors may also throw their hats in, and traditionally their pitches have done well and have been included in prior projects. We'll have three rounds of pitches, as we did in Six Arabian Nights and Tales of Zobeck. Requested length will be at least 8,000 words, possibly more.

Signing Up as a Patron

It's easy to sign up! As a basic patron, you get access to the design essays, design discussion, a copy of the PDF when it ship in late spring (June, at a guess), and the option to pick up a print-on-demand copy at your discretion.

For those who sign up as $50 expert members, you get access to the essays, design discussion, a PDF copy and may contribute complete design material for direct consideration (spells, items, rituals). You'll have access to the playtest draft of the manuscript when it's ready. At your option, you may also pick up a print-on-demand copy of the completed book.

As a $75 senior patron, you gain access to the senior patron discussion and the pitching process (you may pitch one idea per round). You also get access to the playtest draft and other drafts, art, maps, and so forth.

For $150 major donors, you have access to all the other patron perks, and you will receive a signed, autographed copy of the final book. You may pitch two ideas in any given round.

Commission and Refunds
The commission must be met no later than February 28th. If the commission isn't met, I'll refund everyone and write ... something else. Too soon to tell what that might be.

I hope you join Open Design today and help shape the first major project of 2009!

Review the Open Design FAQ, or comment on this commission in the KQ Forum.

Count me in
I'm going for the most basic of memberships - my work has been intruding on my life too much, and we're buying a house that needs some fixing up. In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing how the story turns out. (And hopefully some nice oozes).

I have one question; I've gone for 3rd/OGL and if it turns out to be 4e can I have the choice of staying a patron, rather than getting an automatic refund?

Looking forward to another great project.

Happy New Year!

Re: Count me in
Glad you like it!

You can certainly vote with a preferred edition, but stay in regardless. If folks tell me that, no problem.

It isn't clear from the writing, and i don't want to assume:

Will basic patrons also have the opportunity to "At your option, you may also pick up a print-on-demand copy of the completed book" ??

In the past, that's been the case. This time out, the print edition is more complex, because the Gazetteer will be a public release, and the adventure will be a limited edition.

So, the Gazetteer print edition will be available to all patrons. The Halls limited print edition will probably only be available to the bigger patrons. It sort of depends on how many patrons sign up; I want that print edition to be quite small.

I'm coming in at the basic membership now, but I hope to upgrade once holiday bills are paid off.

Question, though: What character levels are you aiming this towards. (I ask because I have a group that I can't wait to introduce to Empire and Castle Shadowcrag, but it'll be a long time before the party is of sufficient level.)

For 3rd Edition, I can see this working for several levels (and the patrons have in the past shown a preference for about 7 to 11). It will be up to the early patrons to decide.

For 4th Edition, my preferred level would be 7th to 10 (to follow up after Wrath).

I like the idea of the adventure & 4e - just need to decide what level to go in at. I think I'd enjoy being a senior patron but I'm not sure whether I'd be able to give it the time it deserves.
Can anyone who was a senior patron on Wrath or Zobeck give me an idea of what's involved?

As little or as much as you want! You can just sit back and enjoy all the activity or you can actively participate in discussions, write up some things to submit, vote, and so on.

Oh yeah! This sounds like a great project.

I'm down for either 3e or 4e, both have their benefits.

This might be an excellent opportunity to define dwarves in the world of Zobeck, and make them stand apart from their kind in other game worlds.

Really excited about this project.

But due to problems before, I'll wait until edition is set to see if I'll be a patron for this one. If it's OGL, and I have the extra money, I'll be a patron.

Thanks and keep up the excellent work as always.

Re: No offense
You know that signing up to be a patron decides the edition, right? If more $ comes from 4e patrons, then the thing goes 4e. If more $ comes from 3.5/OGL patrons it goes that way. Either party that 'loses out' gets their money refunded or has the option to stay on the rollercoaster.

It's been awhile since I was involved in a patronage, from the start, so I think I'll kick off the New Year by joining this one, but it'll be a couple days. My school has been threatening to release my excess tuition disbursement for months and they finally dropped the check last week, so now it just has to show-the-hell-up.

Anyhow, I'm cool with either edition, I've gotta admit that the flavor of it, with respects to the dwarves, is as enticing as the fey stuff in previous products.

Heck, I might even work up a few ideas and throw them into the ring. *chuckles*

Thanks, I'll be sending out the invites to patrons later today (sort of swamped at the moment), and we should have our first brainstorms pretty soon.

Looking forward to seeing you toss a few things out there. Lots of room for this one to shine.

I'm in for 4E. I went the paypal route but didn't get confirmation yet. Please tell me if you don't see my payment. I'm stoked for this - it is exactly what I want. I'm hoping for 4E as there just aren't a lot of good modules out there.

Yep, I'd agree that there's not nearly enough 4E material. In terms of first-day patrons, 3E is slightly ahead at the moment, but it's MUCH too soon to tell which way this project is going to go.

But hey, tell your friends if the edition is the deciding factor.
[info]daxdoomslayer wrote:

I'm actually not sure if edition is the deciding factor. I could always convert but I have such a surplus of 3E material in that category and my gaming time has fallen off so much I'm not sure if it would be prudent. That said, I really do love the idea and I could easily see me going either way. I love the idea of the whole 'Moria' thing, it's just so old school and fun and is what I want to do with my new 4E campaign.

I had such a great time with Wrath that I've ahead with the Senior patronage on this one! My vote is for more 4e material, but I'll stick around for either system. The experience of the ODP is just too much fun!

I opted for 4E at the Major Donor level. You should have it now.

But as always, I am Edition Neutral. So please transfer my patronage over to OGL if 4E doesn't prevail!

I signed up for the OGL version, but would switch that to 4E if that wins. Looking forward to the Open Design take on the dwarven stronghold.

I may not sign up until the edition is picked - but if it gets really close, 49/51, I'll probably throw my hat in the ring to support my edition. Keep us updated on which way it swings, and I may try to sway it my way if it happens that way.

I love the idea for the OGL side of this! AND, Lulu finally shipped my flip book two days ago--I am hoping to get it by Saturday!

Heck with it--I will want to try out senior patron for this one (3e of course)...

I've joined for the OGL/3E side, but if this happens to go 4E I'd like to remain in. Thanks :)

I am curious about something, though. In the descriptions you say that even a basic patron gets the option of getting a print-on-demand copy. But later on in a reply to one of the comments, you imply this might not be the case. When will you know for sure, and if it turns out to be no print-on-demand, will you allow basic patrons to get a refund? Thanks for the time. :)

Print on demand of the adventure
I'd like to know that before I sign up as patron again. If I sign up as a basic patron (for OGL/3E) I do want to have that option, not just for the Gazeteer.

I'd be up for the 4E version, but level will play a big role in my decision. Personally, I'd like to see something in the 13-16th level range (that's where I expect my 7th level PCs to be around June).

I love Wrath of the River Kind but I'm not sure when I'll be able to run it yet unfortunately!

My first thought was level 7 to 10 (to follow on from River King). But it might go 13 to 16, I really don't know yet.

At the moment, OGL/3E has a 1-patron lead, so it could go either way.
